GET INVOLVED

For every counselor willing to spend the entire week at camp, another camper is able to attend. Counselors arrive at camp the day before the campers to prepare the cabins and welcome the campers as they arrive. Each counselor is responsible for two campers in order to provide the very best care for our campers. One assistant counselor works with every two regular counselors. Training is mandatory.

Besides counselor positions, there are many other opportunities to serve at camp as a staff member. Some of these areas include drama, music, woodshop, beading, t-shirt painting, dress-up, sports/outdoor activities, and counselor support throughout the week. While counselors spend most of their time with their two assigned campers, staff members have the opportunity to interact with many more campers. Training is mandatory.

Those assisting with registration do not attend camp but are vital in welcoming our campers to this new experience. These staff members will assist the director and other staff in checking in campers and loading them onto the bus. Many kids are often nervous and frightened and your smiling face will be the first one they see before they even drive up to the camp. Training is mandatory.

One night of the camp week, we celebrate every child’s birthday with a party in their honor. Past parties have included activities such as pony rides, astrojumps, inflated obstacle courses, balloons, clowns, petting zoo, zip line, cookie decorating, slip-and-slide, and fun birthday games. Of course there is always cake, ice cream and even gifts just for them! More help is always needed with all these events going on. Birthday party volunteers are special gifts to RFK Austin, driving up to camp just for the night of the party.

After an exhausting but rewarding week at camp, staff and counselors are often emotionally drained, especially after having to say goodbye to their campers. The Welcome Home Dinner is a catered “thank you” meal for all the volunteers, giving them the opportunity to share stories and talk about some positive memories of their own. Volunteers for the dinner are needed to serve the meal, decorate/set up, and clean up. No training is necessary and it’s a great way to be a part of camp without spending the week away.
